Dr. Bair O. Gomboev, Vice-director of the Baikal Institute for Nature management (BINM) of the Siberian branch of theRussian Academy of Sciences, Professor of Buryat State Agricultural Academy and Buryat State University. Specialist on economic, social and politic geography. Leading international (Russia - China, Russia - Mongolia, Russia - Mongolia - South Korea), federal (Russia), regional (Baikal region, Republic of Buryatia) research projects on sustainable and balanced development of different regions within Inner Asia.

Conference Announcement

From 18th–20th of October an International Conference will be organized in Chita entitled "Trans-boundary regions in changing world: Russia-China-Mongolia (policy, economic, low, culture, ecology, education)".

The organizers of the Conference (Russian Ministry of Education and Science, Administration of Chita oblast, Chita Normal university and many others - Russian, Chineese and Mongolian institutions) want you to take part in this Conference and asked me to pass you this information. They will pay your travel expenses from Moscow to Chita and back to Moscow and living expenses during the Conference. If you have time and wish to visit Russian part of Inner Asia please let me know and the organizers of the Conference will sent you an official invitation immediatly.

 

New Research Project

Caroline Humphrey, Principal Investigator, together with Dr. Vera Skvirskaya and Dr. Yael Navaro-Yashin, have been awarded an AHRC grant of £290,000 for a three year project entitled 'Black Sea Currents'. The grant is funded by the AHRC 'Migration and Diasporas' programme and the project will be a comparative study of migration, coexistence and 'cosmopolitanism' in Odessa and Istanbul. The research will be a development of earlier work on Central Asia cities based in the Unit, (a) the collaborative project with Dr. Catherine Alexander (Goldsmiths), Dr. Balzhan Zhimbiev (MIASU) and Dr. Victor Buchli (UCL) on Ulan-Ude, Tashkent, Almaty and Astana, and (b) the project with Dr, Vera Skvirskaya, Dr. Magnus Marsen, Dr. Soumhya Venkatesan, Dr. N. Megoran and Dr. M. Saxena on the city of Bukhara, Uzbekistan.
