Cadres & Discourse in late Socialism: The USSR, Mongolia & China

An International Network 2004–6 organised by Weatherhead East Asian Institute (WEAI), School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia, USA & the Mongolia & Inner Asia Studies Unit, Department of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge, funded by the British Academy and the Weatherhead East Asian Insitute.

This project brings together researchers working on nationality issues in contemporary China with anthropologists and others working on studies of the late socialist period in the USSR and other former socialist countries. In doing this, it seeks to privilege the insights of self-reflective anthropologists – those who apply anthropological methods of critical analysis to what are or were their own societies, notably inthe USSR, Mongolia & China.


International Symposium on Inner Asian Statecraft and Technologies of Governance

18–19 March 2004

The Symposium, generously supported by The Sigrid Rausing Trust, The British Academy and The French Embassy, was attended by scholars from Inner Asia, Russia, USA, France, Germany and Israel. There was a full programme of papers and discussion and work is now in progress on publications arising from the meeting.
