Nicola
di Cosmo, MIASU research fellow 19891992 and member of the editorial
panel of Inner Asia is to be congratulated on his appointment
as the first Luce Foundation Professor of East Asian Studies in the School
of Historical Studies, Faculty for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey.
Professor di Cosmo is a specialist in the relationship between China and its Inner Asian neighbours. His research interests cover a wide temporal and geographic range, including: the Manchus and Kirghiz and the Ching/Qing period, the history of the Mongols, the rise of the Xiongnu nomadic empire and its relationship with the Han empire, and the history of warfare in Central Asia.
The
Unit is grateful to The Sigrid
Rausing Trust for its support of academic exchange and core activities
of the Unit. In May the Unit welcomed Sigrid Rausing to one of its regular
research seminars, followed by drinks with members of the unit and a dinner
at Kings College.

At
the anniversary of 40 years of Anglo-Mongolian Diplomatic relations, held
at the Mongolian Embassy in London in February 2003, the Mongolian Ambassador
presented Professor Urgunge Onon, co-founder of the Unit, with a medal "Altan
Gadas" in honour of his services to Mongolian studies.
