Ludek Broz

Ludek Broz is a PhD candidate at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge, where he also received an MPhil in Social Anthropological Analysis. His studies are jointly funded by his college, Corpus Christi, the Cambridge Overseas Trust, Universities UK and the Dagmar and Vaclav Havel Foundation VISION 97 .
Geographically speaking, Ludek's main area of interest is the Altai Republic (south-west Siberia), where he conducted twelve months of fieldwork in 2004/5. (He had visited the area three timespreviously.) In this doctoral research he concentrates on Altaian spirits and demons, and their role in the local politics of explanation and decision-making. Ludek's research draws heavily on contemporary science studies, especially the Actor-Network Theory.
The other important area of Ludek's interest is kinship in Europe. Inspired by current development in kinship studies, he conducted six months research on the incorporation of au pairs into English families in 2000/01, under the supervision of Zdenek Konopasek, and he hopes to work further on this neglected topic.
Aside from his studies, he is the co-editor of Cargo - Journal of Social and Cultural Anthropology (published in Prague since 1999) and he maintains a web page on information technology in anthropology. His other interests include wine, mountaineering, literature, biking, photography, climbing…
